8-Hour Unarmed Security Guard Card Course

The unarmed guard card class is an 8-hour classroom training session held at our Tempe facility on Saturdays from 8 am-4 pm. When you complete the class you will have the basic knowledge to qualify for the Arizona unarmed guard card. This class will also satisfy the requirements for a renewal license every 2 years as the new and renewal courses are the same.

The course consists of several basic topics that will allow students to gain a solid understanding of the functions, roles, and responsibilities of security work in Arizona. All course material is approved by the Arizona Department of Public Safety. All required paperwork is included in the cost of the course, but does not include the AZ DPS licensing fees.

Notes for Our Unarmed Guard Training

While our class provides the basic knowledge you need to apply for an Arizona Unarmed Guard Card, there are a few additional requirements you should know.

Late Arrivals

Out of respect for our students, the door to our classroom closes when the class begins at 8:00 am. After that time, admitting late arrivals is at the discretion of the instructors.

Prints & Photos

Prints and photos can be obtained for $20. Select the option during your registration for the course, and all will be completed at the conclusion of the training course.

License Fees

The $75 course fee does not include license fees paid to AZ DPS. As of 2024, the cost of the unarmed guard license is $72. DPS can only accept the following forms of payment, made payable to the Arizona Department of Public Safety: cashier’s check, money order, or check drawn on a business account.

FAQs on Unarmed Security Guard Training

Since the unarmed guard course is the first step in a security guard career in Arizona, you may have some questions about the process. Here are the answers to some common queries.

The 8-hour unarmed guard card course. This class is the same for new and renewing unarmed security guards. This class can be taken in person or online.

No. If your license is expired, you need to check the “new” box on your registration application after you complete the 8-hour training class. Your class instructor will also go over this for you.

DPS requires a new set of fingerprints if it’s been more than 90 days since you last sent in a fingerprint card. Level 1 clearance cards, CCW, and any other fingerprinting do not count – DPS requires guards to submit prints specific to security licensing.

Students should bring a valid government-issued photo I.D. card. We also suggest bringing note-taking materials, water, and a couple of snacks. If your employer has provided you with paperwork, please bring that too.

Arizona security guard licenses are good for two years. Our Unarmed Guard Card course fulfils the training requirement for your renewal process.
