The unarmed guard card class is an 8-hour classroom training session held at our Tempe facility on Saturdays from 8:00 AM-4:00 PM. When you complete the class, you will have the basic knowledge to qualify for the Arizona unarmed guard card. This class will also satisfy the requirements for a renewal license every 4 years as the new and renewal courses are the same.
The course consists of several basic topics that will allow students to gain a solid understanding of the functions, roles, and responsibilities of security work in Arizona.
The course follows AZDPS requirements for the 8-hour unarmed security guard pre assignment training program. All required paperwork is included in the cost of the course, but does not include the AZDPS licensing fees.

While our class provides the basic knowledge you need to apply for an Arizona Unarmed Guard Card, there are a few additional requirements you should know.
Out of respect for our students, the door to our classroom closes when the class begins at 8:00 AM.
After that time, admitting late arrivals is at the discretion of the instructors.
Fingerprints and photos are included with the in-person unarmed guard class.
Students who complete the online unarmed guard card course may schedule a separate fingerprint and photo appointment through the Prints and Photos page under Schedule.
The $80 course fee does not include license fees paid to AZDPS. As of 2025, the cost of the unarmed guard license is $72.
AZDPS website states:
A person shall pay a fee by cash, cashiers, check, certified check, credit card, or money order made payable to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
Fees paid for services involving fingerpint- based checks conducted by AZDPS are not refundable per ARS 32-2601-16.

Since the unarmed guard course is the first step in a security guard career in Arizona, you may have some questions about the process. Here are the answers to some common queries.
The 8-hour unarmed guard card course. This class is the same for new and renewing unarmed security guards. This class can be taken in person or online.
No. If your license is expired, you need to check the “new” box on your registration application after you complete the 8-hour training class. Your class instructor will also go over this for you.
AZDPS requires fingerprints, a completed fingerprint affidavit and the applicable fingerprint processing fee with security guard applications. Effective July 8, 2026 AZPD requires the fingerprint card and completed affidavit to be sealed together in a single envelope. Always review the current AZDPS appliciation requirements before submitting your packet.
Students should bring a valid government-issued photo I.D. card. We also suggest bringing note-taking materials, water, and a couple of snacks. If your employer has provided you with paperwork, please bring that too.

Arizona security guard licenses are good for 4 years. We recommend beginning the renewal process before your current license expires. The 8-hour Unarmed Guard course satisfies the training requirements for renewal.
